Torch Units are large robots, commonly used by the New Earth Hegemony in their actions. They are, for the most part, normal looking robots. The only exception is their heads, which resemble large PAR lights, with the ability to create a large flash with which to disorient attackers. There are several different sizes of unit, each with a distinct color and naming scheme; white Torch Units are of comparable size to people, while Red units are larger. Additionally, different classes of Torch Unit names from different areas of the food pyramid.
In the Quire system, specifically on Gift-3, some Torch Units have been created by the planet with some level of sentience. At least some of these individuals are now part of the Sailors of the Ark, including Yam and Garlic.
